  • Meta plans to release a camera-free smart glasses model, internally code-named Luna, as soon as October.
  • Luna reportedly swaps the camera for six built-in microphones tied to Meta AI and Meta’s new Muse agent, plus a side button and slimmer temples.
  • The move follows a year of lawsuits, government probes, and police memos targeting Meta’s camera-equipped Ray-Ban glasses, nicknamed “pervert glasses” online.

Meta wants out of the “pervert glasses” business—at least for one product line.

The company is developing a camera-free pair of smart glasses, internally code-named Luna, and could ship it as soon as October, The Information reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Luna swaps the camera for six built-in microphones, letting wearers talk to Meta AI and Muse, the company’s newly launched personal AI agent, per the report. A button on the side activates Meta AI on demand. The temples are said to be slimmer than on current models, with speakers similar to the ones already in Meta’s Ray-Ban lineup.

Meta could show off Luna at its Connect developer conference, running September 23 and 24 at its Menlo Park campus, according to the report. Two styles are reportedly planned, code-named Clubmaster and Burbank.

Meta’s camera-equipped Ray-Ban glasses have spent 2026 collecting a nickname no marketing team wants: “pervert glasses.”

A BBC investigation in January found women being secretly filmed and posted to TikTok without consent. A separate investigation in February found Nairobi-based contractors reviewing footage that included people undressing and using the bathroom.

The fallout kept coming. Class-action lawsuits, a Texas attorney general investigation, and an ACLU-led coalition demanding Meta drop facial-recognition plans all landed within a few months of each other. Even police are wary now—internal memos show the NYPD and Homeland Security warning the glasses could be used to secretly film inside jails and government buildings, and ICE has banned its own staff from wearing them at work.

A camera-free model sidesteps that entire controversy, on paper.

Luna can’t record covert footage of anyone because it has nowhere to point a lens. It also can’t do the thing that made Ray-Ban Meta glasses popular in the first place: point-of-view photos and video, hands-free.

If the October timeline holds, Luna would reach buyers less than a month after Meta shows it off on stage.
